Table 1 Test setup for the applied version of TS-2 and CEN/TS 15119-2 as well as OECD 313 experiments using treated wood

From: Laboratory leaching tests on treated wood according to different harmonised test procedures

Parameter

TS-2

CEN/TS 15119-2 and OECD 313

Test specimens and treatment with wood preservatives

Representative of the product to be tested

Quality parameters for wood are defined (e.g. 100% sapwood), reference to EN 113

Preparation procedure to be developed by the respective product Technical Committees

Treatment and conditioning of test specimens as in accordance with either the recommendations made by the supplier, commercial treatment practices or EN 252

Test specimens with a retention within 5% of the mean are selected and end-sealed to prevent leaching via the end grain

Test assemblies

At least one test piece per test assembly

TS 15119-2: exposed surface area: ≥200 cm2, number of test specimens per test assembly: ≥3

Monolithic products: all dimensions >40 mm

OECD 313: sets of five test specimens according to EN 113 size blocks are recommended (yield 200-cm2 exposed surface area)

Flat products (sheet-like and plate-like): minimum of exposed surface area: 100 cm2, one dimension <40 mm

Water

Demineralised water or deionised water or water of equivalent purity with a conductivity <0.5 mS/m according to grade 3 specified in ISO 3696

CEN/TS 15119-2: water complying with grade 3 of EN ISO 3696, water especially designed for environmental investigations or deionised water, pH 5 to 7 (not adjusted)

OECD 313: deionised water is recommended, synthetic seawater has to be used when wood exposed to seawater is to be evaluated
