The Handbook of Environmental Chemistry
Founded by: Otto Hutzinger – Publisher: Springer – Editors-in-chief: Damià Barceló · Andrey G. Kostianoy – ISSN: 1867-979X
Environmental Sciences Europe volume 22, pages 511–512 (2010)
The first volume was published in 1980 (Volume 1 Part A, The Natural Environment and the Biogeochemical Cycles). Today, 54 titles are available.Footnote 1 Otto Hutzinger wrote in the Preface: “Most chapters in the Handbook are written to a fairly advanced level and should be of interest to the graduate student and practicing scientist. I also hope that the subject matter treated will be of interest to people outside chemistry and to scientists in industry as well as government and regulatory bodies. It would be very satisfying for me to see the books used as a basis for developing graduate courses in Environmental Chemistry.”
Hutzinger closed the Preface as follows: “I consider it a privilege to see my chosen subject grow. My interest in Environmental Chemistry dates back to my early days in Vienna. I received significant impulses during my postdoctoral period at the University of California and my interest slowly developed during my time with the National Research Council of Canada, before I could devote my full time to Environmental Chemistry, here in Amsterdam. I hope this Handbook may help deepen the interest of other scientists in this subject” O. Hutzinger, Amsterdam, May 1980.
In three decades, The Handbook of Environmental Chemistry has established itself as the premier reference source, providing sound and solid knowledge about environmental topics from a chemical perspective. Written by leading experts with practical experience in the field, the series continues to be essential reading for environmental scientists as well as for environmental managers and decision-makers in industry, government, agencies and public-interest groups.
Two distinguished Editors-in-Chief, internationally renowned volume editors as well as a prestigious Advisory Board safeguard publication of volumes according to high scientific standards.
Presenting a wide spectrum of viewpoints and approaches in topical volumes, the scope of the series now covers topics such as
-
local and global changes of natural environment and climate,
-
anthropogenic impact on the environment,
-
water, air and soil pollution,
-
remediation and waste characterization,
-
environmental contaminants,
-
biogeochemistry and geoecology,
-
chemical reactions and processes,
-
chemical and biological transformations as well as physical transport of chemicals in the environment and
-
environmental modeling.
A particular focus of the series lies on methodological advances in environmental analytical chemistry.
The Handbook of Environmental Chemistry is available both in print and online via http://www.springerlink.com/content/110354/. Articles are published online as soon as they have been approved for publication.
