Genotoxicity in aquatic systems: causes, effects and future needs

3rd International Symposium, Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, 22 to 24 September 2010

The conference will be held at the Department of Environmental Health Sciences, University Medical Center, 79106 Freiburg, Germany (http://www.uniklinik-freiburg.de/iuk/live/index.html)

Organizer: Institut für Umweltmedizin und Krankenhaushygiene, Department of Environmental Health Sciences, Freiburg, University Medical Center, under the auspices ofWater Chemical Society, Division of the German Chemical Society, Working Group: Genotoxicity

Conference President: Prof. Dr. Volker Mersch-Sundermann

Scope of the Symposium: Genotoxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity stand for the most adverse toxicological impacts of chemicals on human health and the environment. Therefore, as far as possible, natural water bodies like surface waters, ground waters and drinking water resources should be protected from the impact of anthropogenic pollutants with genotoxic potential. Four years since the first International Symposium, the next has now been scheduled to inform the scientific and regulatory community about advances and new strategies in the assessment of genotoxic hazards, to inform about the use of these assessments in regulatory policy and decision-making and to provide a multidisciplinary forum for the open exchange and discussion of ideas and opinions among students, research scientists, regulators and industry. Following the development of new technologies, this International Symposium will focus on several different themes:

  • sources and potential hazards of genotoxic substances in aquatic systems,

  • ecogenotoxicity/system level focus,

  • nanoparticles in the environment,

  • advanced technologies/new trends and

  • regulatory use of test results for protection of aquatic biota and humans.

Each topic will include one or two invited plenary speakers, plus oral presentations selected from the submitted abstracts. Participants are invited to present platform presentations and posters. Exhibiting companies are welcome.
